How to Develop a Rubric For Content in Essay Writing

Developing a rubric for students' work especially in essay writing is not an effortless job. Many things are taken into consideration but doing away with biases is the most important. With the 6 traits of writing in mind, making the rubric becomes easier than the traditional and makes it easiest to grade the essay. This is one way of developing rubrics for content in essays.

A highest grade of 5 will be given to advanced work with excellent content. This grade is proper when the student wrote with much substance and focus in his essay, with the proper organization of the words and sentences; the content is enhanced by details with clear and concise idea conveyed to the reader. Grading ranges above 3 moving to the highest score of 5 is given to students with just a small amount of flaw in their conventions and sentence fluency.

For a grade of 3, the writing content is not as comprehensive and detailed as compared to those with excellent content. The writing was not developed properly and smoothly. The general topic may be too broad and the following sentences may explain details but not enough to get into the main idea. There is grammar and sentence construction mistakes commonly seen but the essay written can be acceptable.

For a low grade of 1, the essay content is unacceptable because there is no focus. Writing is done tackling on more than one topic which is partially developed and lacks the necessary details. The topic was too broad so it's hard to put in details that will be explained smoothly so that direction of the writing is not evident. Support of the content is too minimal so the main idea of the topic was not properly discussed and conveyed.
