Writing an essay can be very simple when you follow these basic steps: choose a topic, define the scope of your essay, create the outline, write the essay and -- proofread, proofread, proofread!

The Essay Topic

The first step in writing an essay is to select a topic (if one has not been assigned). In order to define a topic, you should think about the goal of the essay. Is the purpose of the essay to persuade, educate, or describe a topic -- or for something else entirely? It is generally helpful to brainstorm ideas by jotting down favorite subjects or thinking of a topic that may be interesting to you.

Define the Scope of the Essay

The next step is to define the scope of your essay. Is the subject matter very broad, or will the essay cover a specific topic with detail-oriented examples? Thinking about the overall topic and scope will help you to begin the writing process.

Create an Outline

The next step is to create the outline. You may think that an outline is an unnecessary, time-consuming task -- but this step will actually help save time! An outline will help keep you focused while writing your essay, and help keep you from wandering aimlessly in conducting your research. It should be composed of the main idea of the essay or thesis
statement, and the arguments that support it. The outline is often numbered and organized by paragraph, but more abstract outlines will also help to organize and focus your
ideas.

Writing the Essay

The subsequent step is writing the essay. The introduction paragraph should begin with an attention grabber. This is a statement the lures the reader into wanting to read the rest of the essay. The next few sentences should be very broad in topic, and should lead to the narrow focus of the thesis statement, which is usually the very last sentence of the introduction paragraph. There are typically three body paragraphs, and each one starts by tackling one of the main ideas presented in the thesis statement. The following sentences should describe and elaborate on the main point. Details of specific examples should be included to strengthen your main ideas. The conclusion paragraph summarizes the essay and provides a final perspective on the main topic. It often begins with a paraphrase of the original thesis statement, and sometimes includes a future prediction based upon the viewpoint presented in the essay.

Proofreading Your Essay

The final step in writing a thesis is proofreading. Proofreading is actually the most important part of writing the essay and is often skipped. A few items to consider when proofreading your essay are the order of the paragraphs, the flow of the sentences, grammar, spelling and the instructions for the assignment. Questions to ask yourself include:

o Does your essay make sense?

o Does each sentence flow to the next sentence well?

o Are there any points that can be made stronger or clearer?

o Are there words that are used frequently?

o Are there any run-on sentences or fragments?

The proofreading process sometimes takes longer than the actual writing process, but this is what makes the difference between a concise and well thought out essay, and a bad essay.

When the process of writing an essay is broken into pieces, the process seems more manageable and easier to complete for the beginner. The process consists of thinking about a topic, creating an outline, writing the essay and proofreading the essay. This makes essay writing an interesting learning experience, and helps the writer express his or her thoughts more clearly, concisely and with more validation.

Crime is an activity, which is against the law. There are various types of crimes; rape, murder, sexual assault, robbery, and assault, among others. There has been a rising rate of crime in various countries and states, United States recording a high percentage. This change of expectations calls for critical analysis of the situation.

Incarceration is the main form of punishment for offenders who break the law. It has existed for a long time, but even with it, there seems to be a high rate of crimes as well as incarceration. United States records the highest incarceration rates in the world due to high levels of violent crimes. For this reason, there is a need to reform the criminal justice system to come up with better workable methods.

The most effective reforms that can be introduced include; introduction of correctional facilities and programmes to go hand in hand with imprisonment, having in place severe punishments and penalties to match each crime, and the frequency and expert intervention such as guidance and counselling sessions when in prison should be introduced (Fairfax). Setting up labour camps where offenders can work, conducting proper investigations. Various advantages will accrue to the state if they adopt some of these reforms. The main reason for the adoption of the reforms is to reduce the incarceration mass. The only way of achieving this urgent objective is by introducing reforms that will help the prisoners to change and other individuals to learn from the mistakes of others to avoid getting into the same trouble. This objective is achievable if the state reviews the existing system and do away with programmes that make prisoners more rebellious.

The reforms will also help reduce costs incurred to run the heavily crowded prisons. Prisons spend money to provide the basic needs for prisoners hence when they increase; it means that there will be more of the federal budget going to prisons. Most people believe that there will be no change even when the federal government implements these reforms. The reason for this argument is that reforms have been made in the past but still there is no change concerning neither the masses of people in prison nor the rates of crime. The rates are still rising year after year, irrespective of whether reforms are implemented or not. Failure may have occurred in the past and the reforms did not bear fruits but this does not necessarily mean the same failure will occur.

Others may tend to argue that the reforms proposed are quite expensive to implement. The reforms that call for facilities and programmes means that the government will have to set aside such funds for the purpose of making the plan a success. The costs associated with the implementation, that is, acquisition of facilities and installation are excessively much. Declining a reform based on cost alone is a great mistake; before a reform is declined, the cost of implementation has to be compared with the benefits that the state will enjoy in future from the reform.

Some programmes especially the correctional ones will lead to creation of new individuals with different trait, people who will be of benefit to themselves, their families, and the society. When prisoners are subjected to a prison where they are corrected rather than punished, there is a high chance of such people changing their behaviour for the better. It is an advantage to the society because when such a person comes out of prison, he/she will have changed and will live as a law-abiding person. Peace will prevail in the environment where this person will go back. There is no reason for leaving out a reform with this advantage.

In conclusion, the various reasons for the need for new reforms in the criminal justice system are valid and viable. It is very important to critically analyse each case and see why the levels of crime have been rising. Many people tend to ignore the fact that old and inapplicable reforms play a role in this case. The analysis of the benefits and reasons against implementation of reforms clearly shows that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages thus it is prudent to carry out a good plan on the process of implementing the reforms (Motivans). The previous one has proven to be weak and non-functional thus it is high time to correct the flaws.

MBA Admissions Essay Writing Tip: Think Globally!

As a former Harvard University admissions interviewer and a Harvard graduate myself, I have a lot of inside knowledge about the Ivy League admissions progress.

Today, I am concentrating on the Ivy League MBA application process, for those of you thinking of applying to a top MBA program. My tip today is:

"THINK GLOBALLY ABOUT YOUR FUTURE"

If you look at any of the MBA essay prompts, from this year or recent years in the past, you will see that a lot of the questions for many of the schools ask about your future career plans, your future goals and dreams.

Very understandable, as each school wants to see that you have a well thought out plan of action: that getting your MBA now, is the next logical step to fulfilling your long-term professional vision.

However, it has been my experience that the applications that are going to stand out, are those that take a GLOBAL approach. An international focus. The MBA applicants that can demonstrate through their essays that they are thinking beyond the confines of their own city, or country, or region, and have what I call a "far-reaching" plan for their career, product, parent corporation, or entrepreneurial business.

GLOBAL is the new catch-phrase.

We are no longer living in the day where a country's economy is self-contained. With social media and the internet, everything is now world-wide, and world-related and business, more than ever before, has taken on an international connectivity.

This understanding needs to be reflected in your MBA applications, and will make you stand out as an applicant. The idea that you are fully up-to-date with this focus, and understand the international, global significance of any business venture, small or large, and thereby have the ability to think on a global, international scale.

This is especially true for those of you who speak an additional language, as that, too, will give you an edge in the ever expanding international business market.

Do you speak Chinese? Hindi? Russian? Farsi? All these languages are great assets to your MBA application, as these are areas in the world right now where business is rapidly expanding. If you speak one of these languages, you need to mention it.

So, if you can demonstrate that you have a far reaching vision, and if you can demonstrate in your essays that you perhaps have additional language skills and experience with other cultures, you will, as an applicant already be way ahead of the game!

MBA Essay Writing Tips

As a former Harvard interviewer, and Harvard graduate myself, I thought I would take the time to answer some of my clients' most frequently asked questions, regarding "How to Create a Great MBA Application!"

TIP 1: Focus on your professional experience

Though obvious to some, it is not obvious to others, which is why I'll state it as my Number 1 point: MBA programs want to hear about your professional experience.

So, whereas on your undergraduate college applications, it was important to show how well-rounded you were, and how you did and participated in all kinds of activities and groups and things, when applying to an MBA program, admissions committees are looking for PROFESSIONAL FOCUS, in almost every question.

They want to hear about your work, your career, your level of responsibility, the number of people you manage, the amount of finances you handle, your goals, your future, and your long-term career interests... all how they relate to you professionally.

So, keep the fact that you "also play saxophone" out of it, unless you are planning on starting an entrepreneurial saxophone-related business. If that's the case, they love that, and you should absolutely mention it.

TIP 2: Demonstrate Vision

Schools want to see that you're not just applying for an MBA because it's simply the next thing to do in order to advance to the next level in your job. They want to see that you have an overall future plan in place, regardless if it comes to pass or not -- 5, 10, 20 years down the road. A plan that makes sense in terms of getting your MBA now.

And, "now" is a key word, and one that you will see mentioned on to a lot of the MBA application essay prompts: "Why do you want to get your MBA now?" "Why is now the time to pursue your degree?"

Most people overlook this little, tiny word when writing their essays, and doing so will cut your chances of getting in. Really. I know. Don't disregard it.

It's important.

Schools want to see how "NOW" fits perfectly into your overall plan. How "NOW" is absolutely the right move to take for your future goals to come to pass. How "NOW" has been well-thought out, is completely rational, and makes perfect professional sense.

Schools then want to see that you have placed that "now" in the context of your future professional dreams. Again, it doesn't matter if they eventually come to pass, or not (I hope they do). What matters is that you demonstrate that you have vision, and a concrete plan, and that by walking out that plan, by walking down the professional path you have laid out for yourself, your dream goal, project, or entrepreneurial venture, or career is a very real possibility.

So, again, focus on your professional experience, make sure you answer the question "Why now?" and demonstrate future vision.

The Difference Between MLA and APA Essay Writing Styles

As we all know, writing formats such as MLA and APA, were designed to format academic documents like essays to make it easier for instructors grade the students' work and to make the essay more professional looking. Generally, these writing formats will be the basis for the instructors whether you deserve to be given an A or a C, aside from the impeccable writing skills you have.

Two of the most commonly utilized writing formats are Modern Language Association (MLA) and the American Psychological Association (APA). Both writing styles have established their credibility and worth in the world of academia and have been utilized by scholars for decades now. Certainly, there are other writing formats for scholarly documents that you could utilize. However, it is highly advised to stick to just one of the writing formats stated earlier.

MLA Writing Style and its Guidelines

When we look at the manual of MLA and read the requirements, rules and guidelines of it and compare it to American Language Association (APA), it is very obvious that Modern Language Association (MLA) writing format's list of requirements, rules and guidelines is comparatively shorter than the APA's list. To be more exact on this, there are sections that are not necessary to be included in your MLA essay, and one of the sections is the title page. Unlike APA, which requires a title page, MLA doesn't for as long as your name appears on your document along with the instructor's name, the course title and the date at the left upper corner of the page, your literary piece will going to work just fine.

Whether you use APA or MLA for your essay, a page header is something to be provided according to the rules of both writing styles. However, when it comes to MLA, it pointed out that a surname and a page number must be presented at the upper right corner of the page. As for the in text citations, format is basically the same with the other college essay formats. A need for you to jot down the name of the author and the page number enclosed in parentheses must be done. Lastly, the Works Cited Page that will be written in a separate sheet of paper provided at the end of your document must list all the sources that you have used during your writing process.

APA Writing style and its Guidelines

According to many writers, American Psychological Association (APA) is harder that the writing format explained above. It has lots of sections compared to MLA. An abstract is also needed aside from the title page with a running head that MLA doesn't require you to have. Reference page like works cited list in MLA is where you will be jotting down all the sources you have utilized, it must be ordered alphabetically by the surname of the authors following rules mandated by APA.

Although, one might find it difficult to conform to both writing formats, one must inculcate in mind that these types of writing styles were actually made to help you and not make your life a lot harder

Some Tips For Good Application Essay Writing

They consider this piece of writing as a platform to determine whether you are capable of taking admission in their institution or not. So your essay should be very impressive.

There are three kinds of topics that are generally given to an applicant. These topics are:

" Tell about yourself

" Why do you want to study here

" Write on any given issue

The way in which the questions are framed may be different but the topics will be more or less the same for all the institutions.

When you are asked to describe yourself or tell something about yourself you should present all the good qualities that you have. The tone should be such that it does not look as if you are boasting about your strengths. Write about yourself with confidence and be down to earth while presenting insight about your personality.

When you have to write why you want to take admission in a particular institution, make sure that all the facts that you are mentioning about that institution are correct. If you write something wrong, the evaluators would understand that you have not seriously researched about that institution. In this kind of question you can mention your career goals and how you think that particular institution will help you in achieving that goal.

If you are not given the above two types of question then you might be asked to write on an issue like terrorism, substance abuse, sibling rivalry, generation gap etc. Whatever the topic is the idea behind it is to judge your take in these issues. Through your viewpoints on these national or social issues, there is an attempt to indirectly evaluate your personality and thought process. While writing on these kinds of topics you can research about the issues but put the information in your own words because through this piece of writing the evaluators do not want to know what others have to say but what you feel.

You work should have three parts:

" Introduction

" Body

" Conclusion

The introduction establishes the main idea of the contents of your work. You can make it long or short depending upon the word limit. The second part is the body, which presents ideas in support of the main idea of the essay. Let the ideas flow in a logical and consistent manner. You can make this part of the essay lively by narrating an incident or experience. This part of the writing is the lengthiest. The conclusion is a summary of all that has been written. You can write it in one or two lines.

College application essay is not very lengthy. As the authorities have to read hundreds of such pieces, they cannot afford to devote much time in each piece of writing. Plan your piece of writing well, write indulgently and leave a good impression on the readers.

Is Essay Writing Difficult? Not If You Follow These Tips

if you've ever had to write an essay then you know that much of what you write can be considered a persuasive essay. That is, you take a position within the body of your work, and then you seek to argue your case in such a way as to persuade the reader to your point of view. However, this is not as easy as it may sound. Consider for a moment that essays that deal primarily with facts are some of the easiest to write whereas a persuasive essay relies both on fax and on your own personal interpretation and arguments. As such, it requires a great deal more creative thinking on your part and can sometimes be quite difficult to finish. of course, nothing is impossible provided you follow a few tips before you begin to write your essay.

Unlike other forms of essays, persuasive essay needs to have a strong hypothesis. The reason for this is that it sets the entire tone of what is to follow. If you do not have a strong afford it is sounding a hypothesis or argument, then you may find it difficult to remain on track as you go through your writing. In short, any title that poses the question opens the door for reader doubt and is not something that you want to use. You also want to take a look at the use of your language within your title as well. Is it strong and does it have an air of authority, or, does it sound unique?

With regards to the body of your work, remember that you are arguing a particular position and as such you need to make sure that you don't go off on a tangent and start looking at the topic from both your position and the opposing one. That being said, you can bring of opposing find points of view if only to use them instead of having your own arguments or to refute them. Remember the idea here is to sway the reader to your point of view and you can't do that if it sounds like you're arguing both sides. You also want to make sure that your thoughts remain coherent from paragraph to paragraph.

Of course, the key point to writing persuasive essays is a strong conclusion. He in it, you want to restate your position as well as restate your proof as well as any points that you think are salient.

Why Are Essay Structures So Important to Essay Writing?

Now many people reading the above heading may look at it and, shaking their head and think, 'What a stupid question!' I know I did too because the answer is surely obvious, isn't it? Well, that's what I thought for many years for the simple reason that I believed (like I am sure that many of you do) that there was no way that you could expect to write 'good' essays in practice if you did not also have 'good' essay structures in place that showed a clear line from the first thought that you wrote on the screen/page in front of you until the very last thing that you put in your conclusion.

And yet, despite this simple reasoning, I never cease to be amazed at the sheer number of essay papers I have seen with little or no effective structuring to them and this is so obviously to their detriment because otherwise good ideas can all too easily be lost within a poor structure. Therefore, when it comes to producing any essay I would advise you to always look to have the following word in mind when writing your essay - 'PLANNING'.

When thinking of your essay structures, however, I would also advise you to look to first 'group' ideas together at the planning stage. For example, if you are writing an essay about the 'Nazi Party's hold over Germany' you may group ideas in the following way -

(a) Economic
(b) Social
(c) Political
(d) Propaganda

At the same time, however, you need to show an appreciation of any 'crossover' between areas because. for example, some issues like the 'Jewish Question' may relate to all four areas of division used for the 'grouping' of ideas. This is because, by way of illustration, it may be economic and social due to the fact that the Nazi Party played on the idea that Jewish people were not German citizens and were taking jobs away from those who were so that they were detracting from Germany's national economy. Moreover, it was also a political and propaganda issue because the Nazi Party blamed the Jewish people for a lot of the problems that the country was experiencing as a whole. Therefore, there is a need to think carefully about the way in which you express your ideas in practice since it is also important to make sure that you express your ideas clearly in concise precise sentences that are pointed and clear in what they are saying.

Poor structuring is lazy and if you fail to express yourself in a clear way it will cost you a lot marks, but have really barely scratched the surface of what you need to appreciate when structuring your work here. Whereas the main purpose of expository essay is to explain the facts of view, the aim of persuasive essay is not only to explain your point of view, but to convince the reader that your point of view is right. The plan of your persuasive essay might be similar to expository one; however, it is advisable to include in the body of your assignments several important elements. First, one should consider strong and weak point of your argument and the contention of your opponents. Second, your contention in this type of the essay should be backed by the up-to date and trustworthy evidence in order to convince e your reader that information provided by you is reliable. In this way it would be easy for you to learn how to persuade even the most skeptical persons.

7 College Essay Writing Tips to Blow Their Socks Off!

1. Write your college application essay before your senior year begins. Senior year is very busy, and you don't need another distraction from concentrating on what's more important: your studies. Get it brainstormed, drafted, corrected and finally written before September 1.

2. Find a topic that you know better than anyone. For example, you're a dancer because you use dance as a way to express with your body what you cannot express with your vocal cords. Who knows the language of your body better than you do? Who knows more about what you say with your dance than you do? You're the expert, which is why it'll be a whole lot easier for you to communicate what you want to say. Read: your essay can be one easy task!

3. Keep it simple. By way of illustration, let's say you're standing on a street corner and you witness a car crash in front of you; you were the only one who witnessed the crash, and the police have asked you to write a description of what you saw. Why did the police ask you? Because they know you are the expert in what you experienced in that brief moment of the car crash. You could write about a brief moment in your life that had some positive impact on you because you are the expert on how that moment affected you. Keeping it simple also means using simple words, so throw away the thesaurus.

4. Make your first statement of the essay the most powerful. Readers in a college admissions office believe 80% of the essays they read are a waste of time. So make your first statement a "hook" - a pleasant surprise that catches their attention from the get-go. Here are some example first-sentences of what some of my students wrote last year:

"I was suddenly surrounded by rifles pointing at me." (theme: paintball) "It was clear that I was completely cut off from civilization." (theme: wilderness hiking) "I had nowhere to go but down." (theme: overachieving) "Pain was a requirement for me to succeed." (theme: dancing/ballet)

5. Read your essay out loud. Besides your eyes use your ears to hear what you're saying. Essay Writing - Why Analyzing Essays and Teaching Writing Has Been So Difficult

Why is it so doggone hard to talk sensibly about essays and to teach how to write them?

Definition Problem & Assumption

The difficulty is reflected admirably in a statement within Wikipedia's coverage on the subject of Essays:

The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story.

And the further we read in that discussion on Essays, the more we are lost in a muddling Valley of Vagueness, even though some specific historical facts are offered to give a false sense of definiteness and a falsely comforting sense of knowledge.
Here's an equally telling definition of "essay" from an Internet dictionary:

A short literary composition on a single subject, usually presenting the personal view of the author.
If we take the strongest elements from each of those statements, we can come up with: An essay is a vague composition, usually presenting the personal view of the author. Let's focus on the last part of that-the personal view of the author.

There's a HUGE assumption in that phrase. Do you see it? Can you bring that out into the open in your own mind, before I do it for you? Think about it for a moment-and then read on, here.

It's one of those assumptions that, when spelled out, makes all the difference in the world for truly understanding something. And I'm sure that when I point out the very obvious assumption, you'll smack your forehead with your open palm and say, "Right! He's nailed it! That's it! Why didn't I see it?"

Why haven't you, personally, seen what I'm about to tell you? Don't be too hard on yourself-the entire academic community hasn't seen what I'm about to tell you, and they've been wrestling with this problem at least since 1580, when Michele de Montaigne published his two volume work, Essais (French for our English word, Essays; and the meaning of the word is the same in both languages: to try, to attempt).

In fact, as I see it, academics of Western Civilization have actually been struggling with this assumption since a Greek by the name of Gorgias introduced Rhetoric to ancient Athens around 425 B.C.

Assumption Clearly Revealed

Okay, I've dangled the bait long enough.

Here's the assumption in that phrase, the personal view of the author - we assume that the personal view of the author is different from most of the rest of us.

If the author's personal view isn't different or NEW to the rest of us, then why bother with it? We surely don't want someone just repeating back to us what we already think, do we? So the underlying assumption has to be that the author of an essay-or anything else, for that matter-is saying something different or new.

AND THERE'S THE PROBLEM-academics (people involved in formal education and teaching) simply have never presented a way of talking about-of teaching about, across the board on all subjects-what's different or what's new. 'How's that?' you're wondering, no doubt.

Well, do you have-or do you remember coming across, in writing or speaking-a definition of different or new that covers everything? Tall order, right?

Look no further. The following discussion clears up the matter:

You see, the idea of new or different has always been a difficult problem because it's so formlessly vague. New (or different) has simply been a big, black, mysterious, even seemingly magical box that could hold just about anything and everything in it-and did!-because, up to now, we've never had a UNIVERSAL way of distinguishing one kind of newness (or differentness) from another.

However, one thing we do know about newness is that something couldn't be new unless there was something old to compare it to, right? But part of the whole problem is that old is just as formlessly vague as new.

What's missing? Answer: Two helpful sets of categories.

Old View Categories

You see, for something to be new, we must be able to compare it to a former version or type that is accepted by the reading or listening audience as old. You know the old saying, "You can't explain color to a blind man."

That is, if there's nothing shared to compare something to, you can't talk about it to someone who hasn't seen or experienced anything that is "like" it. All you can really say is, "Like wow, man!"-and doesn't that just electrify you and make your hair stand on end with insight! Here's what I see as the full list of old view categories:

values
expectations
experiences
reasoning
language
We can't say anything without using these in basic, everyday communication-especially in essays.

New View Categories

Now, here's where old meets new. Through years of study and research, I've found that you can change an old view in one or more-or some combination-of the following five major ways to make it "new:"

reverse
add
subtract
substitute
rearrange
That seems like an absurdly small number to cover all things new, doesn't it? Well, try it out yourself--just think of something new, identify the old that it's related to, and you'll see one or more of those new view categories in use (excepting merely "recent," of course; in such cases, the only difference is that something old has happened nearer in time).

At first, I doubted that small list. One word that gave me a brief hang-up was synthesis. But as I researched and thought more and more about it, I found that to explain synthesis you have to use words like blend, integrate, and merge. With those and similar words, it always comes down to put together in some special way-which is the same as add together. That's simply the add category of new views.

The word analysis gave me similar trouble. But I found that analysis was actually a form of the subtract category, with which you subtract parts from the whole to study the functioning of the whole through its parts.

Conclusion

Hmmmmm. I could bore you with a lot of detail-oriented analyses of published essays and student essays that use the old view categories and the new view categories. But I'm not going to do that because it would take away from the idea-level strength of the major insight I'm expressing here. If you are interested in such proofs, go out and look up on the Internet some widely anthologized essays, such as these:

The Abstraction of Beasts by Carl Sagan
The Eureka Phenomenon by Isaac Asimov
The Nature of Scientific Reasoning by Jacob Bronowski
Thinking As a Hobby by William Golding
All the essays in the list above do unmistakably first state the old view very early on (in Sagan's essay, it's the very first sentence) and then follow up quickly with a statement of the new view (a new view reverse category of the old view value category; published essays practically always have a reverse new view). Then each of them follows with support of the new view in the form of stories, examples, and reasoning. That's always the pattern.

A couple of these five essays play a little loosely with the pattern, but you can still see the pattern for all that. But the more closely and clearly an essay follows the pattern, then the more easy it is to follow and to understand. That's always the case, too.

You simply can't get away from the pattern of old view first, then new view reverse of the old view, and then support for the new view.

Interestingly enough, that very same pattern occurs in short stories, novels, and poetry-with an important twist that entices you to read through to the story's end.

But that 'twist' should be the subject of another article or essay or book, now, shouldn't it?
