What Examiners Look for in an Essay or Dissertation

It doesn't matter what subject you study or at what level you study it, from the age of 14 onwards you will no doubt find that you are tasked with writing an essay or two...and those lucky individuals who go on to study an academic subject at University will find themselves writing half a dozen essays every couple of months. Within education it is almost impossible to avoid the dreaded task of essay or dissertation writing.

Essays and dissertations are predominately used in two ways:

1. An essay title or subject is set, and students are given a finite amount of time to go away and research the subject, and construct a well informed essay that responds to either the subject matter put forward for discussion, or that answers the specific essay question that has been set.

2. The completion of an essay sits as part of a timed examination. Students are led into an exam room, given a paper that contains a number of essay titles that they need to respond to, and they are given a short amount of time (usually no more than 3 hours) to write an essay on this subject or against the posed essay title. In this instance it is recognised that the level of research that goes into the essay will be limited, given that the students will not (normally) have access to text books, reference material and that all important World Wide Web.

The majority of students will find that they have to experience both types of essay writing requirements at some point in their life. And the one crucial theme that runs through both of these different essay writing requirements is this...the aim of the essay written should be to fulfil the examiner's or marker's requirements as best as possible. The success of your essay or dissertation lies in how well you tick all of their boxes so to speak!

So what is it that examiners are looking for when they mark an essay or dissertation?

- They want to see that you have addressed the question that has been posed. So many students make the fatal mistake of writing down everything they know about a subject matter, without actually thinking about what the question is asking. Marks will be lost (and substantial marks at that) if you simply write down everything you know about the subject matter. Less is more sometimes with articles, so think about including only the content that is relevant to the specific question raised - nothing more.

- They want to finish reading the article and come away with the feeling that you really did know the subject matter. This means demonstrating a knowledge of the subject matter in hand. Good ways to do this are to include quotations, examples and case studies.

- They will look to see if you can form an argument. This could include making up your own mind about a particular subject, or it could be analysing the arguments of others and deciding which you more strongly agree with.

- They will look to see how well your technical writing skill is. Can you form decent sentences? Is your spelling and grammar accurate? Have you muddled your tenses?

Writing Essays - Using Topic Sentences to Entice Readers

When you outline your essay's topic sentences in the special way I'll teach you, the idea level of your essay will not only be clearly organized, but it will also entice readers into reading the body paragraphs of your essay, as well.

Here's the deal---The key ingredients for topic sentences are keywords, and there are two kinds:

1. CORE KEYWORDS, which are the main ideas in your thesis

2. Newness Keywords, which link your stories, examples, and reasoning support to your CORE KEYWORDS

Identify CORE KEYWORDS

For instance, suppose you're writing an essay about salads.

You start off saying how most people love salads, and so do you. And, like most people, you like all kinds of salads, even fruit salads. But you're different in that you can't stand fruit salads with apples, bananas, or pears in them.

So here's your thesis (CORE KEYWORDS are CAPITALIZED):

Like most people, I love salads, even FRUIT SALADS, but I just CAN'T STAND FRUIT SALADS with APPLES or BANANAS or PEARS.

Here's a topic sentence for the first body paragraph to go with that thesis:

I just CAN'T STAND APPLES in FRUIT SALADS.

Though the topic sentence does link back to the thesis with CORE KEYWORDS, that's a pretty dull topic sentence, isn't it? Can you see why? Think about it for a moment. Something is dull and boring whennnnnnnn---can you think of when?

Okay, here it is---something is dull, boring, and uninteresting when there is nothing new in it (you knew that, right?). There's nothing new in that topic sentence---it has already been stated in the thesis. It has no Newness Keywords to make readers curious about what's next.

Create General Newness Keywords

To provide interest to CORE KEYWORDS and the main idea in your thesis, you add Newness Keywords.

Newness Keywords are generalities---that is, they are just a bit more general than the specifics of the stories, examples, or reasoning they introduce in their paragraph---and they usually summarize the paragraph. The following two sentences are preferred alternates to that deadly dull topic sentence above, and they illustrate some general Newness Keywords (italicized):

I just can't stand apples in fruit salads---not red ones, anyway.

I just can't stand apples in fruit salads because of some very bad experiences I had with apples in different foods.

************

You can see that by adding some general information as Newness Keywords you are telling your reader what kind of details are coming up in the paragraph. The first example indicates that the paragraph will tell something about "not red ones;" it may seem specific, but it's not too specific, since we don't know which "red ones" are being referred to or why.

The second example suggests you will reveal those "bad experiences" that have made you dislike apples in fruit salads. But, again, we don't know which specific "bad experiences," so it's a generality. Those Newness Keywords make those topic sentences more interesting because they entice readers into wanting to read on and find out the specifics, the interesting details.

Newness Keywords are the secret sauce that appeal to your reader's curiosity.

Combine CORE and Newness Keywords in Topic Sentences

When you combine Newness Keywords with CORE KEYWORDS in a topic sentence, you connect with the main idea of the thesis, and you hint at interesting details to come in the following paragraph, as you'll see in the following three examples.

Example #1. Here's a thesis supported with an outline of topic sentences. The outline shows the use of specific CORE KEYWORDS (CAPITALIZED) and general Newness Keywords(italicized):

Thesis

After my parents' DIVORCE, I actually GREW CLOSER to MY ABSENT FATHER in EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL, and FINANCIAL WAYS.

Outline of Topic Sentences That Entice Readers

Despite the DIVORCE, I've GROWN EMOTIONALLY CLOSER to MY FATHER because now he lets me talk to him about important things, like boys.

Although he's NOT AROUND EVERY DAY, MY FATHER does SOCIAL things with me nowadays, like going on "dates."

Best of all, MY DAD'S FINANCIAL WAYS are better, now, and he buys me lots of fun things and gives me more money than before the divorce.

You've heard that, "A picture is worth a thousand words"---well, a good example is, too, and I think the example above says a lot.So I'll just show you those topic sentences without their Newness Keywords and let you compare and see how much those Newness Keywords helped add enticing interest:

Despite the divorce, I've grown emotionally closer to my father.

Compared to---

Despite the divorce, I've grown emotionally closer to my father because now he lets me talk to him about important things, like boys.

************

Although he's not around every day, my father does social things with me nowadays.

Compared to---

Although he's not around every day, my father does social things with me nowadays, like going on "dates."

************

Best of all, my dad's financial ways are better, now.

Compared to---

Best of all, my dad's financial ways are better, now,and he buys me lots of fun things and gives me more money than before the divorce.

Quite interesting differences, aren't they?

Without Newness Keywords, readers won't have much interest in reading on. But with the general Newness Keywords added, readers are stimulated to find out---

what "important things" she talks about with her dad, especially since there's a hint that one of those things is "boys"---whether you're a guy or a gal, you're probably thinking: Hmm... could be something juicy, even though this is an essay... you never know... I'll check this out....
what sort of "dates" will she tell about---might be some fancy restaurants you've heard about, or some concerts that only a dad would probably be able to afford, or maybe off to see the Grand Canyon or Disneyland or the Cayman Islands, lots of possibilities... might be worth reading on to find out....
what "fun things" is her dad buying her now? And he's giving her more money than he did before the divorce? I don't know about you, but I'm interested to hear the specific details, especially if those really are "fun things" and just how much more money he's giving her now....
See what I'm getting at?

Example #2. This student example with CORE KEYWORDS and Newness Keywords gives another good illustration of how to entice readers to read on for the interesting details:

Thesis

I would never have guessed that RIDING A NOISY, DIRTY CITY BUS would TEACH ME to RELAX, GET BETTER GRADES, and APPRECIATE THE HUMOR IN PEOPLE.

Outline of Topic Sentences That Entice Readers

That NOISY, DIRTY CITY BUS taught me to RELAX because I finally realized that no amount of cursing could hurry it.

After learning to RELAX on the BUS, I began studying French regularly while riding, which introduced me to my French angel and GOT ME much BETTER GRADES in French.

RIDING THE CITY BUS TAUGHT ME TO APPRECIATE THE HUMOR IN PEOPLE by showing me lots of silly personal dramas.

Of course, learning to relax on a bus is a yawner, but the first topic sentence suggests there's an interesting story about cursing that goes along with that, which could provide some interesting phrases... might be a little shocking and fun to read about....

In the second topic sentence, the familiar, old view of getting nothing but irritation out of riding a bus might have some expected silver linings, but better grades because of it...?! And what's that angel thing about?! Hmmm... just might have some tips that could be interesting and maybe even useful....

The Newness Keywords in the third topic sentence also look enticing, with the hint about "lots of silly personal dramas." Sounds like some fun stories are going to be told in the next paragraph or two....

Example #2 shows once again the usefulness of Newness Keywords and the clarity and interest they can bring to your topic sentences while, at the same time, keeping focus on the main ideas of the thesis.

Example #3. Here's another example of using topic sentences to outline the support for your thesis and get the reader's curiosity juices flowing:

Thesis

Because of MY TYPING TEACHER'S NASTY CRITICISM in my sophomore year, I found UNEXPECTED MOTIVATION TO BECOME A SECRETARY, as shown by MY PRACTICE, MY SECRETARIAL BUSINESS SCHOOLING, and MY FIRST JOB.

Outline of Topic Sentences That Entice Readers

Because of HER, over two years I PRACTICED so much that I developed wrists almost as strong as my athletic brother's.

Since MY NASTY TYPING TEACHER graduated from a local business school, I got my own schooling there just to show her up---and I did!

Finally, I got MY FIRST SECRETARIAL JOB, making about twice what she makes---and I cleverly let her find out about it.

In the first topic sentence just above, "Because of HER" summarizes "Because of my typing teacher's nasty criticism" from the thesis. One reason this works is that the first topic sentence follows right after the thesis in the essay, as usual, so we can easily see the connection. This might not have worked with any of the other topic sentences because they would be too far away from the thesis.

The Newness Keywords in the first topic sentence causes us to look forward to learning how strong her wrists really became.... could she beat her brother up, now?... seems to be leaning in that direction a bit...wonder whether that's the case... think I'll find out....

The Newness Keywords in the second topic sentence also rouse our curiosity ... just how much did she manage to show up that nasty typing teacher... 'rooting for the little guy'....

The third topic sentence uses Newness Keywords to let us know there's a final blow to the writer's long-worked-out plan of revenge... can't wait to read about how she cleverly let her know about it, how she reacted, bet it's great....

As you can see from these three example outlines of topic sentences I've shared with you, any writer of essays can write Newness Keywords in such a way that they'll make their readers curious and want to read on.

5 Steps to Write the Perfect Essay

The Secret of Writing an Essay - How the Professionals Do It

What is good essay writing? How can we write the best essay? Well written - what does that mean? These are challenging questions that students around the world put to themselves every year. Certainly, to write an essay is not the easiest thing to do. Like any apprentice, we have to learn our trade the old-fashioned way. How? First, by writing. And second? We need to seek out books and essays we can learn from. It is necessary to read some good writing before to write your own essay. Surely good writers can inspire you by way of example. Here we will examine some techniques and strategies that can easily be applied to writing assignments.

One of the most important things is to learn that you should always plan your essays before you write them. Recall that writing is a process: it consists of a series of steps. Before beginning, you should answer three questions:

A) what is the primary objective for the essay? That is, to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to argue, to question or to inspire;

B) what is the question of the essay? Notice that you can state the question you want to answer in the essay itself;

C) what is your answer? Present your answer in a strong and clear thesis statement: a one-sentence summary. This thesis statement should clearly indicate the specific subject of your essay.

That was easy, wasn't it? So, having answered these questions, you are now ready to jot down ideas and then list them in complete sentences. Basically, we have the following steps: choose a topic (theme), narrow the topic (be sure to address only one main idea), research the topic, analyze the question, and make an argument. The theme or idea is the abstract subject of a text. Okay, it is important to work with this template, thus avoiding starting with a blank page.

We all know that careful organization is a key point in writing a college-level essay, but for now get the ideas without regard to structure. This is because you are creating a rough draft outline. Further you will need to make some decisions about organization. The writing trainers always recommend that your writing style should be lively and engaging. But how? Be sure that your writing excels when you use direct style, strong verbs, and simple vocabulary. Besides, remember to vary your sentences structures by alternating short and long sentences and dependent and independent clauses.

It is now time to define the chief sections and subsections of the essay. Notice that each part serves a distinct function. The introductory paragraph is the strongest paragraph in the essay. It sets the mood: it should deliver what the first sentence promises and to synthesize information, establishing both a historical context and a deep personal connection to the theme presented throughout the essay. Keep in mind that the first sentence of the essay is punchy, essential to grabbing reader's attention.

The second and third paragraphs organize the ideas. What arrangement will you use to organize your ideas? For example: chronological order, point by point, categorizing, deduction/induction, most important to least important or vise-versa, a single cause leading to a single effect or multiple effects/multiple causes leading to a single effect or multiple effects, spatial order, etc. Be careful not to cede to the pitfall of telling instead of showing; the trick is to choose relevant details and use examples, analogies, quotes, statistics, stories, images, etc. In other words, your idea should be effectively supported with examples. Remember: be very convincing in explaining your views. Then, for each point: introduce it, explain it, and discuss how it is connected to your thesis/claim.

Writing a Good Essay - Support

The first part of my articles on SAT test preparation for Essay writing focused on the importance of structure of an essay. Continuing on the journey, we will talk about the second aspect of writing a good essay. Test makers as well as graders are always on the lookout for an essay that presents statements that support the idea. Just as a skyscraper is built on a strong foundation, an essay is constructed on a solid support. Just writing an idea that is capturing is not enough; you need to support your idea.

The Wheel Theory

A wheel of a car has generally four spokes. Consider each spoke as a point of the essay outline. If you miss any spoke of the wheel, the car would not run properly. Hence, your essay should incorporate all four points in the best possible manner.

The first paragraph of your essay should support the main idea of thesis statement. A thesis statement expresses the main idea of the whole essay. A thesis statement is important as it gives you the direction to focus on the main idea, from beginning to the end.

How to create a powerful thesis statement? The best way to do this is to convert the essay prompt into a thesis statement. A well-written thesis statement would work like a wheel for the entire essay- all four factors would be covered. The starting sentences of the second to the fourth paragraph would support your thesis statement. It would be apt to say that the entire essay would try to support the thesis statement. There are two steps involved in converting a question prompt into a thesis statement:

Step1: Reading the prompt carefully
Step2: Using a firm statement to change the prompt.

Let me explain this with an example. Suppose the question prompt says- why do you like chocolates? You can use the thesis statement- I have a number of reasons to love chocolates. Thesis statements must be direct and focused. They should act like a wheel to frame the entire essay. They should be used to address a specific idea, in a clear way. Paragraph two should support the topic sentence. A topic statement directly states the focus, direction and purpose of a given paragraph. This kind of sentence is used to make the idea presented in the paragraph clear and concise.

A good essay would have one of the three types of support: Logical reasoning, examples from personal lives, and specific details. The topic sentence should include all the three types of support to get maximum score on the SAT Essay writing section. Paragraph three should support a different or opposite perspective. Again, it should begin with a topic sentence. In short, this paragraph would cover an altogether different perspective from the one discussed in the preceding paragraph. Why? This is because SAT essay graders look for more than one perspective on a particular topic.

Interestingly, students looking at a question from one perspective are unable to impress the test graders. Using multiple perspectives demonstrate a powerful thought process. Writing the SAT Essay - Understanding the SAT Writing Prompt

The Writing section, being the latest addition to the SAT, perplexes students. SAT exam score are important for college admission. There is no denying this fact. Writing, for a number of students, is a boring affair. Either they fail to develop a thought-flow to pen down, or find it difficult to express their ideas in a cogent manner. How to organize your writing and better your scores on the SAT? This write-up will serve as a step-by-step guide will simplify the SAT writing approach, and thus aid you to register better SAT exam scores.

Understanding the SAT Essay Section

The essay section on the SAT analyzes how a student organizes and supports his/her ideas and presents it in a clear way. College and high school teachers generally judge the SAT essays. Students are given 25 minutes to write an essay. One must write in pencil. College Board says that essays are judged on critical thinking, organization, sentence formation, choice of words and other factors such as grammar, spelling and usage. Using the first-person point of view is advisable as teachers would look or your own opinion.

Your essay must incorporate relevant examples to support your view-point. Broad generalizations are not what teachers look for in an essay. Therefore, you must provide specific examples to illustrate your point. Avoiding blanket statements using words like 'always' and 'everyone' can help you impress the jury.

How to get a good score

The most important thing to remember while attempting a SAT essay is to follow the directions. Try answering the question. Most students stray from the given context and start writing about something that has not directly been asked. Most SAT essays contain a passage from a specific author related to a particular topic. Do not forget to refer to this while you write the essay, in addition to offering your point of view.

Do you practice pre-writing? If not, include this aspect in your SAT test preparation plan. When you take SAT practice tests, and attempt the essay section, always make it a point to outline your ideas before starting to write. There are primarily three parts of an essay- introduction, body and conclusion. Ensure that you draft an easy using these parameters. Literary examples are not necessary to be mentioned in your essay. However, if you feel that sing one would not be irrelevant, go ahead and cite in your essay.

While it is important to be confident, being too sure of yourself can sometimes mislead you. Proofreading is the last, but an important part of good essay writing. You should set aside at least five minutes to proofread your essay. Man times, when you would proofread our essay, you would come across some spelling errors, grammar issues and other usage-related problems. If an extra five minutes can make your essay more impressive, I see no reason why you should not proofread it.

The techniques mentioned here need not only be applied on the actual SAT. These need to be implemented from Day 1 of your SAT test preparation program.

Why is Essay Feedback So Invaluable to Students?

It's funny how nothing really changes however far we get in life . . .

I am now very well into my late twenties looking to help students like you for the best part of the last seven years studying internationally in institutions around the world, but even after all this time I can still remember the first time I was properly asked to write an essay.

Now, of course, when you are in primary (or what many of you may call elementary) school you will have partaken in all manner of writing tasks but when I was a boy I cannot remember ever being told that any of these tasks were essays. As a result, the first time that I can specifically remember being asked to write an essay was the first year of high school in English at the age of about twelve. The teacher said to us that we were to have homework (this was also a relatively new thing as I was at primary school at a time when homework was a rare thing) and that were to have week to write an essay on four sides of A4 paper on what we had done during our summer holidays by hand (yes, we were not always able to use computers) and as to whether and why we enjoyed it.

Interestingly, however, we were also told to look to get 'essay feedback' from home.

The teacher said that we should write our work carefully and, if we did not feel confident about what we were saying first time around, to draft it first and/or write it in stages. Then, when we were satisfied we had finished, we were to seek out a parent, grandparent, older brother or sister, aunt, uncle or whomever else we had available at home to help us to read our work and then to make a comment with regards to what was good about AND how they though it could be improved and then write what they thought on the work and bring it in to class to be marked by the teacher.

Now you may be pondering as to the reason why I said at the start of this article that nothing changes, well the reason is this.

What my English teacher was seeking to do, as he explained sometime later after having marked the work, was to show us that we could get valuable essay feedback from all sorts of different sources as the comments that we got from home were largely similar to those made by our teacher. In effect, he was trying to show us that all opinions counted and that you did not have to be teacher by trade to be able to offer support and advice in practice on as to how to effectively tackle an issue in a piece of writing with good essay feedback. He said that if you can read and you are aware of events around you then you can offer an opinion on any subject put before you because your understanding of the written word and the way an should be structured has developed as a result so that anyone can provide useful essay feedback.

Therefore, even where you progress to the latter stages of high school and on to college and university, I would advise you to still look to your family and friends for views on your work because, regardless of the subject matter of your essay, they can still offer you views on the quality of the work that you produce and really useful essay feedback as a result.

Still not convinced?

If you want to make this a worthwhile exercise, and the person whose opinion you are seeking - aside from your teacher, of course, who will have their own criteria for assessing your work - is willing to do so, then you may ask them to look to check your work according to the following points for really useful essay feedback -

(a) First, ask them to consider whether your work's spelling and grammar is appropriate (even after you have checked this on your computer there may still be mistakes that can be picked up so BE AWARE!!).

(b) Then ask them to consider whether your work answers the question (you should have checked this too but you may have what I call 'essay eyes' - you believe your work is so good that you cannot effectively distance yourself from it to critique it)

(c) At the same time you also want them to consider your structure - Are the ideas you have grouped together effectively in your essay? Are different ideas linked together? Is there an effective flow between paragraphs in your essay?

(d) Is there a clear introduction and a conclusion to your work?

These points that you are asking the person who is reading your work to consider may appear quite basic to you when they are taken at face value, but they can really help you to avoid some of the most basic errors of essay writing. In effect, by taking this approach you will then only be left with the subject related content to worry about and this is where, if you are lucky, you may be able to get really useful essay feedback from your teacher.

Now, of course, you cannot expect your teacher to give you detailed essay feedback where they are then going to mark your work later. However, there are an ever-increasing number of teachers who are now willing to look at your work before it is marked to provide you with essay feedback for you to act upon for the simple reason that it also effects as to how they will be 'marked' - your teacher will achieve more (very often higher pay!) if their classes do well as that is a mark of their ability. Therefore, I would advise you to be grateful for any assistance that your teacher is willing to give you by way of essay feedback - even if they will not read your essay, they may comment on a plan of your work or even just have a discussion with you about your ideas.

Easy Essays - Follow Five Simple Steps to Write Your Best Essay Ever

Do you struggle with writing essays? Do you put off starting your assignment until the last possible minute, then dash through it to get it over and done with? Do you find yourself making any excuse to stop and procrastinate while you're writing?

Here are five steps that make essay writing easy and even enjoyable:

Brainstorm about your essay topic

When you get given your essay question or topic, you might think "I don't know where to start." Or, worse, you might think, "That's so easy - but how can I spin it out to 3,000 words?" Sitting and staring at your essay topic won't help, though. You need to grab a blank piece of paper.

Got that sheet of paper? Good. Write your essay topic in the middle, and start to brainstorm. Jot down any major points that the topic raises, or any secondary questions that relate to it. Don't worry about your ideas being good, or linking together, at this stage: just write down everything that comes to mind.

Make an essay plan

Once you've spent twenty minutes or so brainstorming, you're ready to mould those initial thoughts into an essay plan. Decide on your thesis first; what do you want to say in your essay? Try to put this down in writing - it'll form part of your introduction and your conclusion.

When you're clear about your thesis, work out two to four points that you're going to use to back it up. Write these down, along with any sub-points for each. Doing this now, rather than launching straight into your essay, means that you won't run out of steam half-way through.

Collate examples to use in your essay

Now that you're clear about the points you want to make, you can look for examples to back up what you're going to say. This means going through relevant books, journals and articles to find experts in your subject who agree with you! Sometimes, you might even want to quote from a source and then disagree with it.

If you're studying a subject like English or History, you'll need to quote from "primary sources" or "first hand sources" (such as novels, in English, or diaries and letters in History). But don't forget to bring in some literary critics or historians too.

Draft your essay in one sitting

Don't get into the habit of writing a sentence or two of your essay, wandering the room for a while, writing another sentence, and stopping for a coffee break. Sit down, switch off your mobile - and your internet connection if you can - and get your plan and all your examples to hand. Then set a timer and start writing.

How long you need to draft an essay depends on how fast you write and on the word length, but try to challenge yourself: if drafting an essay normally takes you three hours, see if you can do it in two.

Leave your essay, then revise

Once you've come to the end of your essay, print it out, and leave it for at least a day. When you come to revise, sit down with the hard copy and a pen, and go through, marking any changes that you want to make. Don't try to edit straight onto the screen, as it's easy to get caught up in "tinkering" and miss the real problems.

If you have time, start a whole new document for the redraft; your writing will often flow much better if you rewrite each paragraph and even each sentence. The first draft was raw creation, this is honing and polishing.

One last thing - don't forget that final proof-read when you're done!

A good college essay should demonstrate creativity in both the essay's composition and its arguments. Critical thinking takes more work than a basic summary or simple report, but the college experience is supposed to be more challenging than high school.

If you expect to write a good college-level essay, you will need to invest time and effort into the process. Of course, the experiences you had with writing in high school will play a major role in your success (or struggle) in a college writing class. Some of my students come well prepared and have little trouble getting an A on an essay. Other students, unfortunately, are not as prepared and have to work harder to get the grade they want.

It is not a secret either that checking and grading those highly artistic student masterpieces has become a real pain in the neck for professors and TAs who have to spend their valuable time on processing the hundreds of thousands of words, yielded at the end of each semester by their students, rather than concentrating on the first-hand teaching and conducting their research work.

It is sad to admit, but the overall modern trend consists in increase of class sizes and depersonalization of education. Essays seem to be aimed at elimination of such repercussions, however they only complicate the matter as professors often have no time and resources to duly assess and grade the loads of their students' papers.
