3 Techniques For Writing A Great Personal Statement For College!

1. Relax! Have fun!

"It's all about loosening up," says one California college professor in "Crafting an Application Essay That 'Pops'", a New York Times article which reported on the recommendations of 5,000 admissions officers and counselors who gathered at a NACAC conference. I couldn't agree more.

To help students have fun with their personal statements, Stanford University has come up with an interesting twist: They ask applicants to write a letter to their future freshman roommates.

Here are some samples, quoted in the article, of how students approached the essay:

"If you want to borrow my music, just ask. If you want to borrow my underwear, just take them."

"I eat ice cream with a fork, and I drink orange juice right after I brush my teeth just for the sour taste."

"If you have anything other than a Dodgers poster on the wall, I will tear it down."

Note that all these lines are written in the first person - unfortunately to some, a required element of writing about yourself. And note that all the lines are unique. It's unlikely that two applicants would have written the same thing.

Here's the key to writing a great essay: Write something no one else could have written.

If that sounds like a daunting task, loosen up! Take a cue from Stanford's essay question, no matter what topic you choose to write about. All you have to do is tell stories about yourself.

2. How NOT to Start your College Application Essay

One common pitfall students fall into is trying to write an essay about their reasons for applying to school, instead of simply telling a story. One of my past clients started her essay to graduate school with, "I am applying to the XX school for several reasons." I coached her to simply start telling her story. This approach made the project a lot easier, and made her essay a lot more interesting!

Here's the start of an essay that meets this requirement:

"When I went to Fall Out Boy's Chicago radio show, there was the comment from the drummer, 'The girl from New York is here.' When I fought my way to the front of the crowd in Florida, there was the bassist's finger pointing at me as he mouthed one of my favorite lyrics: 'I still hate you.'"

This opening line works because it tells a story no one else could tell. It brings us into a world unique to the applicant. And it sets us up to think something interesting is going to happen in this essay. The reader is compelled to read the next line.

Contrast this to an alternate version of the essay that might have read, "Music is one of my passions, and because of that I attend a lot of rock concerts. My favorite band is Fall Out Boy."

You might laugh, but version two is the way many college essays read. Or, to avoid boring the committee, applicants swing the other way: "Raindrops heated by the flashing lights above, falling abundantly and without end, singeing my hair, my skin, my eyes... "

Here's a tip: If you are not a brilliant creative writer, just stick to the facts. They will set you free.

3. Doing it in 500 Words

The Common Application suggests a 500-word limit for a college application essay. The more you stick to a story - a story that is directly linked to the point you want to make in your essay - the easier it will be to stay within that limit. Note that it's okay to spill over by a couple of words - but think of how impressed an admissions committee will be if you can knock their socks off in 500 or under?

The Real Value of an Admissions Essay

College admissions essays and personal statements will play a role in deciding who among an oversupply of well-qualified applicants present the most compelling case for admission. Why? Essays and personal statements provide one of only a few opportunities to present your unique personal qualities to committees through your voice. Although the essay will most likely not be valuable enough to overcome low grades and test scores, essays must be thought provoking, easy-to-read, and personable, to be effective. Free write...the rewrite. Those of 'us' in the writing business know that the key to great writing is 'rewriting.' Begin first by taking time to write something down; a thought, a story, a life experience, whatever comes to mind. Then begin the process of reviewing, editing and reflecting. Write multiple drafts, and elicit objective reviews from one or two people that can provide constructive feedback (teacher, counselor, or mentor). Be sure to allow time for those that read your essays to review what you have written (hence...begin early).

Admissions committees seek students that present intelligence, maturity, and awareness. You can best demonstrate these qualities by following the guidelines set forth for your essay(s). Keep the length below established word limits, and stick to crisp, classical writing structure: well organized, strong introduction, and reflective conclusion.

Avoid the temptation to embellish your essay with achievements. It is appropriate, for example, to elaborate upon a single experience or achievement and relate that 'one' event to your application for admission (experience led to personal growth etc), but it is entirely different to splash the essay with items that are listed elsewhere on your application. It is a waste of time and a waste of what I refer to as 'quality character real estate.'

If you have experienced tragedy or hardship in life (which many of us, including myself, have as young people) be very careful about how you present those personal problems and traumatic events. If you really have not 'overcome' and grown from them it can backfire. It can be done effectively, and you should never shy away from telling your story, but you have to remember to be positive. Focus on what you have learned, what you have gained, or how you have grown or changed, from difficult experiences in life. Remember that adversity is something to be overcome - so, if you choose to write about something difficult or dark, talk about how you overcame the situation and how you will continue to grow in the future.

Avoid the urge to use language that you are unfamiliar with: use the essay as a dialogue. Some of the most inspiring essays I have ever read are void of any sense of adventure or eloquence. They were 'real:' a student talking about learning the values of hard work by working a job after school to help support their family, or talking about their passion for art, children, tall buildings. Regardless of the story or theme, inspiring essays commonly present positive thinking, intriguing perspective, and personable vocabulary.

Last but certainly not least, do not stress over the value of your admissions essays. An admissions essay is not nearly as valuable as three to four years of hard work - so, don't forget that if you find yourself staring a blank Word document for some time when you attempt to write yours. Your essay will not overcome a poor grade average at many competitive institutions. With the said, do remember that the true value lies in what can be learned about you - present the person behind the academic record and test scores and your essay will serve you well.

One of the most daunting challenges seniors face as they go through the college application process is writing application essays. Unfortunately, most student start off thinking that they have to do this completely on their own and as a result often get stuck, sitting in front of their computers, trying to squeeze words out, one at a time.

It's also proper, if not imperative, that other people proofread and give you feedback on essay drafts so that your essays stand out from the crowd of other applicant essays.

The purpose of the college essay is to help admissions readers find out something about you that hasn't been said on your application. They also want to find out how well you express yourself and write. There are three specific things that students must do to assure the quality of their essays:

1. Make sure you're answering the question being asked
2. Stay within the number of words that have been specified
3. Make sure that you don't have any punctuation or grammatical errors.

Many students don't appreciate that good writing is a process, not an hour or a one day event. That is, you don't just put down on paper your first thoughts, and send them off.

Good writing involves a series of steps.

1. First, brainstorm ideas with your parents, friends, or teachers to come up with some ideas.
2. After gathering your thoughts and materials needed for an essay, write a first draft. Notice, I said a first draft.
3. Once you have a draft, ask someone to give you feedback about it:

+ What about the essay works and doesn't?
+ Is there something missing?
+ Are there good transitions from one paragraph to another?
+ Does the essay have a beginning, middle and ending?

In case you're thinking that getting feedback "is for babies," just know that a good friend who has written many books that regularly show up on the New York Times Best Seller List always asks friends and colleagues to give him feedback as his writes two, three, four or more drafts of the same book.

After you've received feedback, take the suggestions that make sense to you, make changes to the essay and go through the process again. Once again, make sure that the essay is grammatically correct.

Some students think that admission essays are a place to "let it all hang out." I don't think so. College admission essays are not a good place for you to recount your struggles with alcohol or drugs, eating disorders, sexual experimentation, or your family's dysfunctions. It's a place to tell a story that will help a reader get to know who you are. It's also the place on the application where you can describe what turns you on intellectually, a challenge you've faced, something you have learned, or problem you've solved.

While writing compelling college admissions essays isn't always easy, you'll do a better job and have fewer problems if you involve others in the process.

SAT Essay - 4 Tips to a Great SAT Essay Score

Many students experience some anxiety when the time arrives to take the SATs. After all, the SATs are an important exam that many institutes of higher education consider during the admissions process. The essay can be especially difficult for students. However, proper preparation can lead students to success. A well written essay will grab the attention of graders and earn an excellent score.

SAT essays are graded by two different graders. Each grader has six points to distribute, which allows for a combined high score of twelve. Essay graders will be grading your papers content, organization, clarity and be looking to see that you followed directions as indicated in the prompt. Graders will be judging each of these specific areas but will also be focusing on your essay as a whole.

The first step in writing a solid SAT essay is to comprehend what the prompt is asking for. Make sure to fully understand the prompt before you begin writing and focus on the main idea. This will set the groundwork for a solid essay and allow you to begin writing a high scoring essay. Students often misunderstand the prompt because they did not read it carefully enough and then receive lower scores. Avoid this simple mistake by reading the prompt more than once.

Essays must include thesis statements. A solid thesis statement is the beginning of a successful essay. The thesis statement will answer the question that the prompt is asking and give the grader an idea of the direction of the essay. It can be helpful to include the some of the wording of the prompt in the thesis statement. The thesis statement will be included the introductory paragraph of your essay along with a basic summary of the main ideas that will be discussed throughout your essay.

The length of your essay should be at least four hundred words. Research completed by MIT indicated that students who wrote at least a four hundred word essay received higher scores about ninety percent of the time. The body of your essay should be composed of at least three to four strong paragraphs that support your thesis statement. Each paragraph should include an introductory and concluding sentence. In order to prove your ideas include academic examples from history or literature, while avoiding personal stories unless specifically asked. Essays with personal examples do not score as well as those with clear academic examples. The final paragraph of your essay needs to summarize and conclude the essay. Anecdotes or analogies, often found in conclusions of the highest scoring SAT essays, are wonderful way to end an essay.

Writing a well written essay that receives a high score on the SAT is entirely possible. Correctly following the prompt, avoiding vague ideas and writing at least four hundred words will put you on the right path towards achieving a perfect score. Try not to become too consumed with one specific guideline, but focus on the essay as a whole, and you will see positive results!

College Essays - How to Write them Fast

Whether your grammar or punctuation is poor, you don't know how to spell or you just can not get the words flowing, writing an essay is one of your least favorite activities. You are not alone. A whole industry exists for both ethical and unethical ways to help you with your essay writing. This article will explore a few ideas on making your essay writing experience less painful while still creating a quality paper.

If you write like you talk you will end up with a very unprofessional paper. However, if you are among the people that can not get started this is exactly what you need to do. Choosing the right subject or the right angle on the subject can really speed up your research. If a subject is to broad you may have a hard time deciding what to include in your essay and the reader may feel it is incomplete. A narrow subject will tend to write itself as there is only so much to say. It is important that you find plenty of information on the subject so that you can choose the best sources to quote. The second part of speeding up research for your essay is to limit your searches to reliable resources. You need to make sure any source you site is respected and accurate. One way to do this when doing internet research is to limit your searches to .gov, .edu and journal articles. This will remove a lot of the less desirable search results.

Spelling, Grammar. Style and Punctuation.

Here is the hard truth, if you are in college and still struggle with this you probably always will. I do recommend taking a remedial writing course if you believe it may help. There is another option. Ask for help or pay for help. There are plenty of people that can proofread and edit your paper. It is important that the people that edit your work have strong writing skills.

GMAT Essay - Tips For Effective Writing

While most Business schools are very clear about their cut off regarding GMAT scores, they are not very clear about their requirements for GMAT essay scores. Does this mean that you shouldn't take the GMAT essay sections seriously? Not at all! Look at it this way. The highest-ranked B-school you can get into is one at which you are a borderline candidate, right? And it is the borderline candidates who are going to receive the closest scrutiny. In such a close situation, it is the GMAT essay scores that come to your rescue. Hence with a little extra effort on the GMAT essay section, you could probably get into the best possible Business school available for your GMAT score.

GMAT Essay writing section is relatively easier to score. With some discipline and practice, you can do fairly well in this section. Here are a few tips to guide you through and help you produce an effective essay.

Be Short but Persuasive:

Write a short essay, limiting it to about 250-300 words. Let the flow of thoughts be coherent and the tone persuasive. The body paragraphs should expand upon the points that you presented in the introduction paragraph. Provide specific details whiling structuring one main idea in one paragraph. Thus the 2 to 4 points made above should require 2 to 4 developed paragraphs in the main body section of your essay. It is also advisable to use examples as it helps expresses your idea more cogently. Make an effort to maintain the interest levels of the person reading the essay.

Conclusion Statements: All is good if it ends well
The conclusion should summarise your point of view. This can be done by restating your position and presenting the thesis statement of the essay in a revised format.

Time Management:

The time allotted for the GMAT essay section is 25 minutes. This must be utilised effectively to obtain the best possible score. The initial 3-5 minutes should be spent in understanding the topic correctly, analysing all relevant aspects of the topic and formulating a structure. This step will ensure a right flow of ideas and establish the order of their presentation. The next 13-15 minutes should be spent in writing the essay maintaining the flow of thoughts while citing examples from real life. The last 5 minutes should be reserved for revising and editing your work. This phase, often overlooked, is extremely crucial. Failure to invest a few minutes in revision often leaves your writing laden with errors. No one is perfect the first time, and you are no exception. Remember that uncorrected writing may prove to be very detrimental to your final GMAT essay scores.

What Not to Do:

It is important to keep your writing crisp, interesting and informative. Here are few things to avoid:

(1) Avoid wordiness and redundancy.

(2) Avoid using tough words as it breaks the flow of ideas.

How To Write An Essay In As Little As Quickly With These 5 steps

7 Steps to Improve IELTS Exam Writing

Step One: Identify the Different Tasks

The Different Types of Task One in the IELTS Writing Exam

Task one of the IELTS writing exam can be separated into two key types. Static tasks, which are tasks that have only one time period; and change over time tasks, which have two or more different time periods. Then, task one of the IELTS writing exam includes different types of charts, which should all be looked at to be well prepared. The most common ones are: tables, pie charts, bar charts, line graphs, process diagrams, and maps. Finally, with task one of the IELTS writing exam, you need to use different types of language depending on whether the task consists of numbers, percentages, or steps in a process. Therefore, there are three key dimensions of task one of the IELTS writing exam:

1. static or change over time

2. type of chart

3. numbers or percentages

Identify the Different Types of Task TWO in the IELTS Writing Exam

For task two of the IELTS writing exam the two key elements are the TOPIC and the TASK. In theory, the topic could be almost anything. Although many topics are on the following subjects: education, crime, society, media, transportation, environment, and technology. In addition, many of the past topics seem to be recycled, so if we look at many of the past topics that have come up in the exam, we have a reasonable chance that we will have thought about that particular topic.

Next comes the TASK. I have identified that the task is almost always one of the following three tasks: an argumentative essay, a both sides and opinion essay, or a two question essay. I have talked about these three essays at length on my website. I have observed that about 30% of candidates on any given exam day seem to fail to either understand the topic or identify the task. In this case many people are failing, not because of their English ability, but because of their poor IELTS ability, or ability to know how to respond to questions in the exam. Note that not only your task score will be lower if you don't respond closely to the task, it tends to affect everything. For instance, you might use a lot of academic vocabulary, but if it is off-topic you won't get the full value for it.

Step Two: Read Lots of Samples for Each of the Different Tasks

Reading samples of different IELTS tasks can help you appreciate the differences between each type of task as well as help you learn the language and structure that is required for each particular task. Not every sample will be an accurate response to the task, even if it is written by a native English user; so a little caution is needed. Step Three: Learn How to Structure your Report or Essay for Each of the Different Tasks

Structuring your tasks well is important to score well on one of the four key grading criteria Coherence and Cohesion. In addition, it also helps you score well on the other three grading criteria. Your Task Response score is enhanced because it is easier for the examiner to assess whether you have responded to the task and topic if you have structured your ideas logically. In addition, errors with vocabulary and grammar may be less serious if the examiner already knows your key point and therefore can guess what you mean, despite their being an error with language. In other words errors are more serious when the examiner is lost and has no understanding of what you are saying.

Step Four: Practice Writing Each of the Different Tasks

In order to fully appreciate the different types of tasks in the IELTS writing exam you should practice writing as many different types as you can. This will help you remember the structure and language that you need to complete these tasks, help you improve your writing in general, and also alert you to any areas of uncertainty for completing the task. To illustrate this last point, imagine you are writing an argumentative essay and then you realize you don't know how to write the last paragraph. In this case you could read same samples or models and see how other authors completed these essays. In this case we should summarise our main arguments and then give our final opinion. We should also send a signal to the examiner that we are summarising our main arguments by starting the paragraph with words such as "In summary" or "In conclusion."

Step Five: Have Someone Check your Tasks

After writing your writing tasks it is best to try to get someone to read them and get some feedback. Most English learners don't seem to like to do this with their classmates, but I would say it has merits. Everyone has different areas of expertise and it can be a good learning exercise for students to check each other's writing. Step Six: Learn From the Feedback on your Tasks

If you do get your essays corrected by another student or a tutor, it is essential that you pay close attention to the feedback and learn from it. If you have made errors with the task response (for example you wrote an answer that was off topic) or you didn't structure it well, then you should think about what you did wrong in the planning of your essay. Perhaps you rushed to start the essay to quickly or just didn't read the question carefully.

Step Seven: Rewrite Tasks to Avoid Repeating the Same Errors

Sometimes, the best way to make sure you avoid repeating the same errors is to rewrite the same task, using the feedback from your marker to make sure that you are able to correctly produce a response to a particular type of question or task, before moving on to conquer the next type of task. This is especially true if your exam date is a long way off.

How To Write An Essay

Read the Question

This sounds too obvious to mention. But every year some students see a word or phrase in the title and proceed to reel off a prepared answer without considering whether what they are writing actually addresses the question asked. This will be immediately obvious to anyone reading the essay and gain you few marks. Read the question several times to make sure you understand what it is asking.

Analyze the Question

When you have read the question, you should then analyze it. This is vital -- many people do not make the distinction between what the question is asking and what the question is about. By breaking down the title into key words (the issue to be considered) and topic words (the subject matter), you can ensure that you actually answer the question rather than provide a simple narrative of events.
These are fairly straightforward examples, but you will come across titles that are much more difficult to analyze so get into the habit of doing it now. Once you have analysed the question, you are ready to write your plan.


This is without doubt the most vital part of writing an essay. It is your plan that determines what approach you take to answering the question. If you have written your plan properly, you will know exactly what your answer is going to be -- this is not something that should be decided while you are writing your essay! More importantly, your plan will ensure that you actually answer the question. Everything you write must be related to the question, and without a plan it is all too easy to lose focus and write irrelevant nonsense. Not answering the question is the most common failing in A level essays, and there is nothing a teacher likes doing more than crossing out huge chunks of an essay with the word `irrelevant'! Write a good plan and this won't happen to you.


Once you have made your plan, you are ready to begin. How do you start an essay? Unfortunately there is no hard and fast rule -- it will depend very much on each individual title. However, one thing is certain: your introduction must make a good impression. It is the first thing anyone will read: if it fails to grip, the rest of the essay will have to be very good to retrieve the situation. Ideally your introduction should sparkle, leaving the impression `Wow, this girl knows what she's talking about: I want to read more'. At the very least it must be competent. Preferably, it should also be short -- if your introduction lasts much more than a third of a page, you have missed the point. So, faced with a blank piece of paper, what do you actually write?

The Middle

The main body of the essay is where you prove your case. Once you have planned your essay, this section will almost write itself. It is just a question of filling in the gaps. You will know what paragraphs you are going to write and what information you are going to use. However, remember that you are making an argument, not narrating a story. You have already identified the key words in the question -- now is the time to use them. Every paragraph must refer in some way to the key words or it will be irrelevant. Be ruthless -- you will have far more information than you need and must select carefully only that which you need to support your argument.

However, you must equally avoid an essay consisting only of argument -- you must not make unsubstantiated claims. For everything you say you must have a supporting fact or example -- otherwise your essay will be just so much hot air. This balance between analysis and supporting detail is what makes up the skill of essay writing, and takes time to learn. Once you have done so, success will be yours


After all your efforts making notes, you will naturally want to use some of them in your essay -- that is why you made them. However, you must be very careful how you use quotes. They can only be used in a discussion of various historians' points of view, i.e. `Wilkinson says.... but Shennan says...', or to sum up an argument you have already proved. What they absolutely 100% can never be used for is to prove a point. The most common use of quotes is `Wilkinson says that with no further information. This does not prove your point. A quote from an historian, however well respected, is not proof. Saying that Wilkinson has said something does not prove that what he has said is true. If you are going to use a quote you must support it with the relevant facts or examples, just as if it was your own words, or you will gain no marks for your carefully memorized notes.


The conclusion is where you sum up what you have said in your essay. It is absolutely vital -- never fail to write one. This is the last thing an examiner reads and counts for a great deal: a good conclusion can rescue an indifferent essay and set the seal on a good one. It is here that you draw together the threads of your argument and hammer home your points, leaving the reader in no doubt as to your answer. You should refer explicitly to the key words of the question and reinforce the points you made in the main body. Above all it should contain nothing new -- it is simply a restatement of your argument. If there is anything you have not already said it is too late now!

Essay Assistance - Writing An Assignment Is Not An Easy Task

Writing an assignment is not an easy task, and nor should it be. However, being a brilliant theorist does not necessarily go hand in hand with having a good writing style. Your brilliant hypothesis must still be expressed lucidly, within a structured essay, and this is where essay assistance comes in.

Academic report writing is a skill in itself, and should be taken seriously if you are to achieve full recognition for all your hard work. It is important that the merits of your ideas are portrayed accurately, clearly, and unambiguously.

Grammatical accuracy can be easily overlooked when essay writing. It is obviously very important to put your ideas down on paper in the flow of your thought processes. Grammar may very well seem less important at this stage of developing your essay.

The structure of an academic essay should also be thought out at an early stage. Grammar, punctuation and spelling is likely to taken on a secondary role in the essay-writing process, and the challenge is then to hone your academic writing to perfection. You may be able to do this yourself, but an extra pair of eyes is always more than useful. Essay assistance is a great help even for the fluent writer, not least for the confidence it may give you that nothing has been overlooked.

For the student who lacks confidence in their use of language it is vital that the effort put into an essay is not weakened either by lack of attention to detail or by lack of knowledge in an area which you may not feel you are being examined upon. Here are the steps that are usually described as necessary when preparing to write an essay:

Choosing the Topic
Taking a Stand and Stating it in the Thesis
Doing the Appropriate Research

Now, this sounds to me like a whole lot of work. But, let's face it, it most likely will need to be done, and again, most likely, will take you hours to complete.

No - there is an ethical way to writing an essay without spending hours researching and trying to pull stuff out of your you-know-what, or paying someone else to do it. Having someone else write your essay is intellectually and just humanly dishonest. And even if they tell you it will be 'free of plagiarism,' just be aware that passing someone else's work as your own is plagiarism by definition.

So, what are you to do, then? Here is one simple step to cut your essay-writing time in half:

Pick a topic that you know best.

That's it. Just pick one that your brain already has the most info about. For example, if you give me a choice of the following three essay topics, which one do you think I'll choose?

Wars can (or cannot) sometimes be justified.
Consumer confidence has (or has not) changed drastically in the past few years.
Essay writing is (or is not) the biggest pain for most college students.
So, which one do you think would be my top choice? You probably guessed it correctly. Yes, the one about essay writing. Why? Well, because this is my area of expertise, and I could write fifty essays about it without doing any research on the Internet. I simply have enough material in my head to do it.

I think that you'll find this advice pretty straightforward and obvious. But you'd be surprised at how many students don't take full advantage of this information. And why is that? Perhaps, because they don't know how to utilize it and make it most effective. And I'll give you the key action steps to make this stuff work for you in a second. But first, let's look back at our list I presented in the beginning, and see how this simple step of choosing a topic that you know best can help you shorten each of those traditional steps:

Choosing the Topic - well, you know what to do here. If you know nothing about golf, don't choose to write about it.
Taking a Stand and Stating it in the Thesis - this will be so much easier when you know your topic. And make sure you take the stand that you really believe in. Trust me, your professor will not care if your view contradicts his. Besides, he can't give you a grade based on some kind of a bias.
Doing the Appropriate Research - here's the most time-consuming part. If you choose the topic you are most familiar with and state a point you're passionate about, then you will either be able to do very little research, or just skip it altogether.
Writing an Outline - if you've read my other articles and been on my blog (mentioned below this article), then you know that if you write a good thesis statement, you won't need to create an outline - your thesis statement will be your outline. And it will be easy to write it if you've chosen the topic you know well.
Writing the Body of the Essay - this is, of course, the meat of essay writing, if you will. It will be so much easier and faster (probably twice as fast) when you know your topic.
Maybe Writing a Conclusion (depending on your style or your professor's requirement) - you could even skip this step, as I've mentioned in my other articles here and on my blog.
And now, I'd like to give you a few tips and simple action steps to make this work for you:

Take the list of topics given by your professor and choose the one you know most about. If nothing appeals to you as familiar enough, try to suggest your own topic to your professor - chances are he will approve it.
If your professor didn't provide you with such a list, it's even better - just come up with your own, based on some topic you know well already, and okay it with your professor.
Take a stand that is aligned with what you believe in your heart.
And a key tip: build your argument around your own logic rather than lots of evidence from the outside sources. Provide your own argumentation rather other people's. This will feel liberating and will allow you to write pages without interrupting yourself to refer to the Internet.
Finally, do this a few times. Practice makes perfect. You'll be amazed at how much good and structured knowledge had been hiding in the depths of your mind.

College Application Essay Tips

Fitting your life story into a 500-word undergraduate college admissions essay is truly a daunting task. The only thing you can think about when writing your college essay is acceptance or rejection. Everyone tells you that you need to make it personal, but how personal can something be when it's in a stack with a thousand others? The key to becoming a great essay writer and impressing admissions officers with a strong personal statement is to break down your approach in strategic steps. Before you begin this arduous but rewarding process, take a look at these:

(1) Start Early: As soon as the school you are applying to releases a college essay topic, it is in your best interest to start thinking about what you would want to write. Most good writing requires an "ah ha!" moment and those come from devoting a good amount of time to contemplation. Many times there are multiple essay topics and you need to think about which one you would choose. It's more important to find one that fits your personality rather than one that sounds smart. Moreover, college admissions officers will tell you that the last admission essay that is reviewed has a much more difficult time being genuine and unique than the first one that is reviewed. The first essay is only compared to itself. The last essay submitted was compared to the 20,000 received before it.

(2) Brainstorm: Your personal statement does not need to fit your entire life story. Stick with one idea, event or aspect of your life and run with it. Brainstorm all the possible things that apply to that one idea for an application essay. Custom essay writing comes from looking at the different angles around that one particular subject. You want to appeal to all the different senses (sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste) of the reader. The only way for them to imagine the scenario in your college entrance essay is if you can thoroughly explain it. This requires you to be thorough in your brainstorming process, too.

(3) Drafts: The more sample essays you write the better. You can only improve your writing by writing and re-writing the ideas you have on paper. A strong personal statement for college has a coherent direction. That direction can be determined by mapping it out on paper many times.

Three Keys For Writing the Best Possible College Admissions Essay

College admissions officers consistently rank the personal essay as one of the most important factors in their decision to admit or reject students. It's one of the few parts of the application in which an applicant represents herself or himself not in dry statistics, but in her or his own words and ideas. A well-written personal essay transforms a student from a package of information into a real person for the committee, whose essential job it is to stand in judgment. No matter how smart and successful a student you have been, if you don't write a personal essay that quickly and effectively reveals you to be passionate, intellectually curious, and a person of strong character, you won't be asked to become a member of the university community. So, as you write your personal essay, consider these tips:

1. Think about your audience and write for them. Who are they? What is their task? Under what conditions are they reading your essay? College admissions officers read thousands of essays from hopeful applicants. And they read them over the course of a few short weeks, often according to a set of criteria that have not been made public and that are designed to reduce the pile of applications in front of them to manageable size. With a maximum of 1000 words and no more than a minute or two to create an impression, you have to make the reader's job easy and interesting and give them reason to spend more time reviewing your application. Your writing must be clean, clear, well-organized, and easy-to-read. What's more, the content of the essay must be original, compelling, meaningful, and distinctive. And, because your readers need to assess your analytical and intellectual skills, your personal essay must display the rhetorical markers of a highly-skilled thinker and communicator.

2. The personal essay turns you into a real person for the admissions committee. The person you represent yourself to be in your essay must be authentically you. But that doesn't mean it should be your deepest, most intimate, inner-most self. You're applying to become a member of a pretty special and exclusive kind of community. One, like any other community, that seeks to perpetuate its most important values. Present the wrong you to the college or university community and you'll be rejected.

Instead, work hard to display essential personal qualities that are most relevant to the diverse missions of the college or university to which you are applying. Remember that universities and colleges are first and foremost institutions dedicated to the life of the mind. Words and ideas are passionately real at the university and are deeply integrated into the daily life of the people who live and work there. So any personal experience or ambition that you describe in your essay must become fodder for purposeful reflection that is of interest and use to university folk. You'll need to explain what your experience or ambition should mean to someone committed to an intellectual approach to life.

3. The personal essay is a writing genre, which means that its readers have concrete expectations of what should and should not be included in it. Ask those of your friends who have gotten great packages from the schools you want to attend to see their personal essays. Write or call the admissions department of your target schools to see if they have samples available. Use the internet to find successful samples. Prof. Allen Grove's website is a reputable place to start. He not only provides strong sample essays but explanations of how and why they work.

Once you've found great samples, study them carefully to learn how to build an essay that makes all the right moves, while signaling your originality and distinctiveness. Remember, even very proficient professional writers struggle as they learn to write in a new genre to a new audience. You may need to try (and fail) several times before you figure out how to write a truly great and authentic personal essay, one that will set you apart from the thousands of your competitors.

7 Ways To NOT Sabotage Your Admission Essay

I got seriously involved in the college admission
essay-writing business shortly after I published my eBook
on recommendation letters, Instant Recommendation Letter
Kit, a couple of years ago.

People who bought that book for help with their
recommendation letters soon started asking me if I would
review their admission essays and/or personal statements
for them. In some cases, I was asked to write their essays
and/or statements from scratch.

To do that properly, I was obliged to conduct a lot of
research into the entire subject of admission essays.
So, I did a fairly extensive literature search of what
was available on the subject, both online (Internet)
and offline (books).

One thing that really struck me in my research was the number of people that seem to go out of their way to sabotage their
own college admission efforts.

Time, and time again, I read about the first-hand
experiences of Admission Committee members who received
essays and/or personal statements with two or three
strikes against them from the outset due to some glaring
oversight, omission, or risky strategy.

In fact, it's been hard to believe at times, some of the
things I've seen on draft essays that have been submitted
to me. Fortunately I've been able to fix most of those
before they went any further. Unfortunately for some
people though, these problems don't get fixed, and end
up being submitted to an Admissions Committee.

Here's a list of the seven (7) common mistakes that
reviewers frequently encounter when reading admission
essay personal statements:

1. Eliminate Spelling and Grammar Errors

This is the most commonly cited error. It is not a small
consideration. Admission Committee members generally see
these kinds of sloppy errors as a reflection of the
candidate's personality and an indication of how they
will likely perform in their studies. It also makes the
reviewer question the seriousness of the candidate,
since they can't even take the time and trouble to get
such an important document correct.

2. Don't Forget To Change the Name

This one is surprisingly common. It's amazing how many
Admission Committee essay reviewers have mentioned this
error. It usually refers to a situation in which a
candidate writes a "generic" essay and then submits it to
a number of different programs. This is not a bad thing
in itself. But then, for whatever reason, they forget to
change the name of the institution or program! So, the
last sentence may read, "It is for these reasons that I
believe that the Yale Business Program is the one for me".
The only problem being that this was the application to
Columbia! Admission reviewers generally take this as an
insult, and it doesn't do anything to help the candidate.

3. Make Sure You're Original Enough

Your essay or personal statement must be specific enough
so that the admissions committee can gain a good
understanding as to who YOU are as a person, and exactly
why YOU want to attend that specific institution and that
particular program. Some candidates fill their essays
with generalities and platitudes that could apply to just
about any person and/or program. This doesn't help the
Committee, and thus won't help the candidate. You've got
to tell your own unique story in your own unique voice.

4. But, Don't Be Too Original

There are cases in which people tend to go too far
overboard in announcing their own uniqueness. People have
written poems, told stories, and submitted videos when
there was no such requirement. This is highly risky and
is likely to alienate many reviewers rather than endear
them to you. Generally speaking, an extreme approach like
this will be seen as "grandstanding" or trying to get
attention just for the sake of it. Remember, that hundreds
(or thousands) of other applicants are operating within
the same stated guidelines as you are. The challenge is
to make you stand out as different, but within those

5. Avoid Talking "Through Your Hat"

Some people have a tendency to make sweeping or grandiose
statements that they can't really back-up. Such statements
as "I'm going to find a cure for cancer" or "I intend to
eliminate poverty from developing countries" are seen as
naïve and somewhat trite at the university program level.
They're nice sentiments, but they don't show a realistic
understanding by the candidate of the career path and
educational program they have chosen. Make genuine
statements that show a good understanding of you in
relation to the world around you.

6. Answer the Question

Admission reviewers often report that many candidates
don't address the specific question posed on the
application form. When this occurs, one of three
situations is possible: 1.) the candidate has made a
conscious decision to ignore the question asked for some
reason, 2.) the candidate has not read and/or understood
the question, or 3.) the candidate has submitted a
"generic" multi-program essay and has not taken the time
to adjust it to address the particular question at hand.
Even when applying to multiple programs, make an effort
to adjust your essay or statement when necessary to deal
with the specific requirements of different programs.

7. Respect the Guidelines

This refers to situations when an application form states
a specific requirement for the number of words or
characters for your essay or statement. Some people seem
to completely ignore these. Don't. They were put there
for a reason. When one doesn't follow these very specific
guidelines, they are either choosing to ignore them for
some reason, or their "generic" multi-program essay is
just being plugged in and they won't take the time to
adjust it for the specific program. Ignoring such
guidelines can make admission reviewers wonder if the
applicant's inability to follow instructions extends
to other areas that might have implications on their

Why do so many people "shoot themselves in the foot" by
committing such easily avoidable errors? Beats me.

I'm not sure what the problem is. Perhaps it's because
many people assume that they can leave the drafting of
the admission essay or personal statement to the very
last minute, and things then slip through the cracks
during the last minute rush. Or, perhaps some people
think that the essay isn't really all that important,
and probably won't get read.

Both of these assumptions are serious mistakes.

In fact, the admissions essay personal statement is
probably the single most important part of the
application to a university or college program.

And yes, these essays do get read. At least once, for a
poor essay that will not go any further in the review
process. Multiple times, for a good essay that continues
through to the end of the evaluation process.

All of the foregoing "don'ts" are very avoidable mistakes.
So, why commit one of these errors when there's no need to?
After all, isn't the college and university admission
process competitive enough already?

So don't make it extra difficult for yourself (or the
Admissions Committee). Read the application very
carefully and do exactly what it says. You won't go

How to Write an IB Economics Evaluation Essay

Economics evaluation essays are often regarded as one of the most difficult assessment components of the IB Economics program. Students often struggle with structuring their evaluations and applying their economic knowledge to the question. However, evaluations do not need to be difficult and students often overcomplicate their thinking when writing evaluations. In this guide, we will examine first, the wrong way to approach evaluation essays and then how to correctly structure an evaluation. For this, we will use this question to demonstrate the essay writing process:

"Evaluate the extent to which a depreciating exchange rate may benefit or harm an economy."

The wrong way

Many students adopt this approach when writing evaluation essays:

1. Define

2. Descriptions and analysis

3. Evaluate

Evaluation should not be the "icing on the cake". Rather, the evaluation should be the cake itself. Writing an economics essay using the above approach can easily lead to the mistake of describing everything about a depreciation and leaving only a small part of the essay for evaluation.

The next problem is that, when reading this type of essay, it is unclear as to what the student is evaluating until near the conclusion. As the student, it's also easy to get sidetracked.

Some students using this approach may often run out of time and not do any evaluation whatsoever, which will make earning even a 6 difficult.

Finally, this with this approach, it is difficult to effectively tackle different types of economics essays. With the approach in this guide, evaluations can be tackled almost systematically which means that less thinking time is required, leaving more precious writing time.

Note: This approach can work and I'm sure there are students who have scored 7s with this approach. But it is much more difficult to learn if you are unfamiliar with economics evaluations. What I recommend, is to use a systematic strategy and structure that can be applied to almost all types of essay questions.

The correct way

First, let's think about what evaluation actually is.

This can be found in most economics mark schemes:

Effective evaluation may be to:

· Consider short-term versus long-term consequences

· Examine the impact on different stakeholders

· Discuss advantages and disadvantages

· Prioritize the arguments.

The third description is the one that we recommend as it can suit the widest range of possible examination questions. Stakeholder and long run versus short run analyses are often subsets of a discussion of advantages and disadvantages, i.e. the advantages and disadvantages to different stakeholders, or in the short run and long run. Regardless of the question, there will always be advantages and disadvantages. However, there may not be enough to discuss regarding short run versus long run, or regarding various stakeholders.

You should prioritize your arguments anyway, listing the most important advantages/disadvantages first.

The approach I recommend can be used for almost all types of evaluation essays (With some minor tweaks). The key here is that with practice, you can do evaluations almost systematically, which saves on planning time and keeps your essay focussed.

So, the 5 steps to getting full marks in your economics evaluation essay (Using the advantages and disadvantages approach):

1. Define key terms in the question

This is fairly straightforward. The mark scheme awards a few easy marks just for defining the key terminology. It also helps to focus the essay and for the student to get into "essay writing mode."

2. Answer the question in 1-2 sentences

Essentially what this means is, summarise the entire essay into 1-2 sentences. This sentence is crucial and is designed to focus your essay. All of your future paragraphs from here will support this.

It is also important to demonstrate your intention to evaluate here. Your 1-2 sentence summary must have elements of evaluation - i.e. useful phrases to use include, "it depends on" or "there are advantages and disadvantages" or "there are many costs and benefits associated" etc.

This sentence can be fairly vague. What's important is clarification on the direction you will take with your essay.

3. List and explain advantages

Note: For policy choices, this can be replaced with "benefits" and for questions where you are required to evaluate a statement, simply replace this with "arguments supporting the statement"

The more detailed the explanation of the advantage, the fewer advantages you need to discuss and vice versa. Aim for at least 2 and at most 3, although in rare instances you may only have one advantage that you discuss in length.

With practice, you will intuitively work out how the length and detail that each advantage needs to be discussed in. Ideally, include one diagram per advantage discussed.

As you become more advanced in your essay writing, it is often useful to qualify these advantages as well. Rather than simply writing "One key advantage is that the policy will reduce unemployment," write "Given that the economy is likely to be experiencing a deflationary gap, an key advantage of the policy is that it will help to bring the economy closer to full employment."

4. List and explain disadvantages

Note: Replace with "costs", or "arguments against the statement" as appropriate to the question.

The principles behind this are the same as for advantages.

5. Weigh up advantages and disadvantages

It is often the case that the advantages and disadvantages do not carry equal weight. Depending on what is being evaluated and the economy in consideration, it is often more appropriate to lean one side or another rather than simply writing "it depends."

This is essentially your conclusion. For the vast majority of evaluations, this should be a tentative conclusion, i.e. "It is likely to be advantageous overall" rather than "It is definitely advantageous overall."

For evaluations of policies, it may be powerful here to consider some alternative policy options. Remember also that doing nothing is a possible policy choice.

Key things to remember

1. Your essay's purpose should be to evaluate. Evaluation should not be the "extra" part you add on for bonus marks.

2. Answer the question and only the question. But use the question as an opportunity to show off your economic knowledge

3. Diagrams should always be "sandwiched." Relevant text should always be used to introduce the diagram and subsequently to explain the diagram. Do not have a diagram hanging at the end of a paragraph or randomly inserted before a chunk of text.

4. Diagrams must be labelled accurately and titled. Diagrams should also show a shift of some kind. This can be done by using an arrow. I also recommend labelling diagrams Figure 1, Figure 2 etc. This makes them easier to refer back to.

5. Use real world examples. Tackling this is easy. Go on Google and find a statistic for:

a. A country that is experiencing rapid growth (Hint: China)

b. A country that is experiencing very slow growth

c. A country experiencing high inflation

d. A country experiencing low inflation or deflation (Hint: Japan)

e. A country with low GDP/capita

f. Countries with high and low income inequality (HL)

g. Countries with fixed and floating exchange rates

h. A country with high levels of debt

i. A country that is a net exporter

j. A country that is a net importer

The list goes on. Basically, you can get some quick and easy marks just by having some real world knowledge handy.

6. Have some original thought

Original thought is essentially using your creativity to add a little extra flavour to your response. Try to go a little beyond what is mentioned in the text book. The easiest way to do this is to qualify your advantages and disadvantages to the question specifically.

For instance, if the country has high debt levels and you are evaluating depreciation, it may be useful to include something like: "Given that the economy is experiencing high debt levels, a depreciation is likely to make it more difficult to service debt repayments."

Your essay should not be generic. To achieve the highest marks, it needs to be targeted to the question. This is especially true for the 8 mark data response evaluation question.

7. Explain concepts linearly

What this means is don't have your analysis jump from A straight to D. Explain your reasoning in a step-by-step manner, as if you are an economics teaching explaining the concept to a student.

For instance, if you are trying to explain that lowering interest rates is likely to increase aggregate demand, your explanation should look something like this:

"Lower interest rates represent a lower cost of borrowing. As such, firms more likely to invest in capital, which is likely to increase the level of investment in the economy. Furthermore, a lower interest rate results in a lower return on savings, which is likely to result in a lower marginal propensity to save and thus a higher marginal propensity to consume. All else being equal, this is likely to result in higher consumption. Since investment and consumption are both components of aggregate demand, lowering interest rates are likely to lead to an increase in aggregate demand."

The wording could probably flow a little better, but you see the point. Explain concepts in a linear fashion or the examiner may get lost, or assume that you don't fully understand what you are writing.

8. Practise, practise, practise!

Write as many economics essays as possible before your final exam. This is the only way that you will be able to master the art. After you have written each essay, ask for feedback from your economics teacher. If you are doing past paper questions, look at the mark scheme to see what you may have missed.

In your final exam, do not expect to have much time left remaining. Through practice, you will be able to write faster and not need to commit as much time to thinking. In your final, planning time should take no more than 5 minutes and for the most part, if you have this structure memorised, you should be able to think ahead as you are writing.

At first, it is acceptable to use the textbook/Google as you are writing. But I have a rule for this - don't use the textbook twice to look up the same concept!
